Why Should You Choose Built Up Roofing?

Posted by: Jonathan Gaspard Posted on: Aug 12, 2022

There are a lot of different factors to consider when you're looking for a roofing material, specifically for a flat roof. Knowing exactly what to look for can be overwhelming if it's not something that you're used to thinking about. You would need to consider a number of factors — the type of roof, your property location, and budget too. But if you have a flat roof, it’s time to consider built up roofing. This type of roofing material can provide you with the protection and durability that you need for your home or commercial property.

Built Up Roofing

A common type of flat roofing material, built up roofing (also known as BUR membrane), contains layers of tar, coal tar, reinforcing fabrics, and bitumen (asphalt), finished with an aggregate layer like gravel or stone. It’s a convenient roofing option for buildings with flat roofs or low slopes as it makes a continuous sealed surface.

Types of Built Up Roofing:

-Ballasted Asphalt Built Up

This type of BUR hasn’t adhered to the roofing membrane. But the stones and gravel used for this purpose are large in diameter. The stones or gravel are simply blasted onto the deck, so it's easy to install under any weather conditions. The stones or gravel offer a sturdy base for the BUR roofing membrane. The weight of these materials ensures that it won’t blow away in strong winds, which makes them an ideal choice for flat roofs that are in exposed areas.

-Hot Built Up

Because Hot BUR is applied as a liquid, it may be more labor-intensive than other types of built up roofing systems. Hot BUR is a type of liquid asphalt that is used to adhere the stones or gravel onto the deck. Hot BUR can be applied in any weather condition, so it’s a good option for flat roofs that are exposed to strong winds and other weather elements.

-Cold Built Up

The Cold BUR system can be applied with a squeegee, eliminating the need for toxic fumes and making it suitable for use in all climates. Cold built up roofing systems are generally made from bituminous material and can be applied in any weather conditions. They’re often used as a form of waterproofing, but they also provide an extra layer of protection against wind damage. Polymer Modified Polymers are added to the asphalt to make it more flexible, which makes it easier for contractors to work with this type of BUR system. It’s also resistant to water penetration and has higher thermal conductivity than other types of built-up roofing materials.

Here are some reasons to choose built-up roofing for your property.

● Maintenance requirements are low.

● Fire retardant and aesthetically pleasing.

● The BUR building is strong and well-constructed, making it resistant to typhoon winds.

● Offers advanced protection against water and minimizes water leaks.

● Built up roofing is energy-efficient as it helps to reduce utility costs by resisting harmful rays from the sun.
